This gem on the outskirts of Ballynahinch has a genuine wow factor. It is a stunning venue for many reasons; the grounds, the gardens, the buildings but the food and drink are also of major appeal.
The Café is where you will find many great, traditional home-cooked options. Head Chef David Earle has good relationships with local suppliers including Carnbrooke Meats, Ewing’s Seafoods, Draynes Farm, Yellow Door and Glastry Farm Ice Cream. Montalto grow quite a bit of produce on the estate itself, have their own brood of free-range hens, an apiary and almost all the baked goods are created in-house.
The reason for this is simple; supporting local producers as well as growing their own produce, not only helps to sustain the local economy but also ensures they use as much fresh, high quality, naturally grown ingredients, as possible.
David changes the menu offering several times throughout the year but there are always tried and tested favourites available. Think homely soups, warming stews, spicy curries, healthy fish dishes – as well as a selection of flatbreads, all cooked freshly for you in an authentic Italian pizza oven.
Because no meal is ever complete without some sweet indulgence, you’ll want to top it all off with a delicious dessert from the eye-catching patisserie counter.
The opulent Afternoon Tea is also a real treat and includes a guided tour of Montalto House. Don’t forget to browse the deli retail items on display and pick up something scrumptious to take home.
