Local Ice Creams Scoop UK Awards for Creative and Delicious Flavours

The busy Easter ice cream season began last week with a flourish of Golden Scoop
Awards for original flavours created by six producers from across Northern Ireland.

Coleraine’s Morelli’s Ice Cream, a Food NI member was the big local winner in the
UK awards which are organised annually by the Ice Cream Alliance (ICA) and
traditionally herald the start of ice cream sales was the big winner in this year’s
awards.

There were other significant awards too for Lick Gelato in Newcastle; Maud’s in
Carrickfergus; and Mullin’s in Kilrea, part of dairy industry leader Dale Farm, a Food
NI member. Lick Gelato is also a FoodNI member.

While old favourites like vanilla and raspberry ripple remain popular with the judges,
local producers came up with creative winning flavours such as sticky toffee crunch,
macha and white chocolate and toffee and salted caramel roulade.

The coveted awards celebrate the very best in ice cream, a £700 million industry.

managing director of Morelli’s, a producer of authentic Italian-style ice creams and
frozen yoghurt. Lick Gelato also gained five stars for its creamy vanilla, lemon exotic
ripple and for lemon and rhubarb ripple.

Morelli’s collected 11 major awards for a range of tasty flavours including five stars
each for vanilla, apple crumble, cherry cheesecake and raspberry apple. Mullin’s
won five stars for vanilla and three stars for a sticky toffee crunch, and Maud’s four
stars for a triple whammy blend of caramel, biscuit and honeycomb.

The awards, judged by international panel of experts, showcased the creativity and
innovation underpinning the ice cream and frozen yoghurt industry here for
consumers to enjoy over Easter and into the summer months.
