Armagh Leader Making Eating More Healthy Fibre Easier
Eat more fibre is common advice nowadays, but understanding the roles of
different fibres in the body isn’t easy.
Patrick Woods, managing director of Linwoods Health Foods, a FoodNI
member, in Armagh, has built a successful career around healthy seeds and
other fibres. He readily accepts that “a lot of education is required to better
inform people about fibre and what types they need”.
He points out “a healthy gut and digestive system is integral to good overall
health and wellbeing”. “I firmly believe fibre has so many health benefits and
over time over time this well become more well-known,” adds Patrick.
“Consuming various types of fibre is equally important to maintain a healthy gut
and microbiome.
“Much of the fibre has been removed from our diet due to increased use of
ultra-processed foods. Now it’s time to add it back in,” he continues.
He’s aiming to focus more attention on fibre with the launch of a new range of
products – Fibre Boost, Protein Boost and Psyllium Husk powder – “to ensure we
provide people with both soluble and insoluble fibre”.
“Soluble fibre helps slow digestion, lower cholesterol levels and feed the good
bacteria in the large intestines. Phyllium husk is a brilliant source of soluble
fibre.
“Insoluble fibre helps promote regular bowel movements and a feeling of satiety
which can support weight loss. Flaxseed and chia seed are both high in
insoluble fibre,” he adds.
Linwoods Health Food is now an internationally successful developer of
nutrient-rich, plant-based superfoods like cold-milled flaxseed, chia seeds,
hemp, and overnight oats.
Launched over 50 years ago by John Woods, Patrick’s father, the company
aims to enhance the health and wellbeing through nutritiously dense, healthy
foods using the finest organic ingredients and sustainable production methods.
Other products include menopause support and activated nuts. The enterprising
company has also won a host of awards for its innovative product and
attractively packaged range.
