Pesto may have been created in Genoa, but this gutsy little green sauce is adored all over the world. This year, for the first time ever, Northern Ireland held a qualifying heat for the World Pesto Championship and the winner was the north coast’s own Clare Rainey. She was one of 10 competitors who whipped up their versions of classic pesto in front of a team of judges at the National Trust Giants’ Causeway Visitors Centre. A team of Italian judges flew in to help choose the winner from a selection of amateur and professional cooks. They had just 40 minutes to come up with the perfect pesto using the ingredients and tools given. No doubt they got a few tips from the Masterclass the judges gave. Claire will be flown over to Italy, be put up in a hotel and will get to grind her pesto in the spectacular surroundings of the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa in March 2014.
