Chefs across Belfast will be cooking up a storm for a Shrove Tuesday with a difference as the humble pancake is given a ‘Backin’ Belfast’ makeover.

Eateries throughout the city will be featuring specially created signature pancakes on their menus to mark Pancake Tuesday (February 12) – or ‘Mardi Gras’ as it is known in other parts of the world – ‘Fat Tuesday’.

The Backin’ Belfast Pancake Challenge will see chefs do battle to create the ultimate pancake. Diners will then be given the opportunity to nominate their favourite and be in with the chance of winning an overnight stay in the city.

The challenge this year is to expand the pancake repertoire by adding savoury, sweet and signature dishes in the city’s many dining establishments. Diners will have the opportunity to nominate their favourite pancake on Tuesday, February 12, by tweeting a picture of their pancake and naming the place where they ate it along with why they loved it.

Their tweet must include the #BackinBelfast hashtag. The lucky winner with the best photo will get an overnight stay in a Belfast hotel with a special pancake breakfast. Come into the city on Tuesday and have a pan-tastic time!”

Today local chefs from James Street South, Mourne Seafood, Coppi and Il Pirata got together at City Hall to announce details of the Backin’ Belfast Pancake Challenge and promised some contemporary twists on the traditional favourite.
