The Gluten Free Patisserie

More and more people are choosing to, or having to eat gluten-free these days, but Katrina Lynch sees no reason why those people should be denied delicious patisserie and breads.

She is a trained pastry chef whose aim is to provide great-value, great-quality products without the risk of cross-contamination.

What started as a cottage-industry has now grown into a thriving business. As well as supplying shops and selling at markets and events, Katrina also does classes in Gluten-Free Cooking and Baking at Ashfield Girls High School in Belfast. Check the website for details.

Being gluten-free doesn’t have to mean giving up on your favourite treats.

The Downshire Arms – Hilltown

Harry and Pauline O’Hare are at the helm of this fine establishment right in the centre of Hilltown. The building is stunning. It’s Georgian in style and the décor really complements it. We love the private dining and function rooms upstairs and the gorgeous apartment-style accommodation at the back, but what about the food you say?

Well, you will have absolutely no complaints on that score.  Harry’s food is hearty and delicious. Think local fish in crisp batter, steaks that are as good as they get and Mourne lamb shanks on buttery mash. They also do a range of paninis and lighter bites as well as desserts that really hit the spot like pavlova and sticky toffee pudding.

Food Served 12-9 daily

Clayton Hotel

You may have known this Belfast city centre hotel as the Holiday Inn but it was renamed in July 2015. It has 170 rooms and plenty of space for weddings, conferences and functions. Since the takeover they have put a strong influence on local produce. Suppliers include Keenan Seafood’s, Northern Smokehouse and Wilson’s Potatoes. Their steaks are dry-aged in a salt chamber in Inch Abbey. Their carrots come from Eglinton and the eggs are from North Down.

Foodwise their style is traditional with a modern twist. They have tried to keep the menu light and free from too many heavy creamy sauces. Everything is cooked fresh to order and where possible is made in-house. They source the best ingredients from local suppliers so they can give their customers a real taste of what’s on offer in Northern Ireland.

Signature dishes include Salt and Chilli Squid, Medallions of Monkfish wrapped in Parma Ham with a mango, radish and rocket salad and watermelon salsa. They do a mean 8oz beef burger and they say their steaks are as good as you will get.

Start your day the clean way with their Vitality breakfast which includes homemade power shots, muesli, granola and fresh fruit. There’s a traditional breakfast buffet and gluten-free options too. Something for everyone!

Lime Tree

Do you ever wonder how some places get their names? Well, this place has Antipodean links. William Massey was born in Limavady and became Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1912-1925. To commemorate his inauguration, he had lime trees planted in Limavady, hence the name of this multi-award-winning restaurant.

Stanley, in the kitchen and Maria , Front of House  opened up this relaxed, informal restaurant in June 1996.  Together they have won numerous accolades over the years both for the food and  service winning  the Tourism Northern Ireland Restaurant / Taste of Northern Ireland award twice; the only restaurant to have achieved this.

They use seasonal, local produce to create dishes with a  healthy Mediterranean twist. The restaurant boasts a modern menu approach, offering a good, balanced selection of fish , meat & vegetarian dishes catering for all budgets .You can view  current menus on their website www.limetreerest.com. They might have Atlantic Scallops on the menu or Cod with a Chickpea Crust. Whatever is on, you can rest assured of an amazing meal
