ARTISAN PRODUCERS POP-UP AT BELFAST AIRPORT

A pop-up shop championing Northern Ireland producers is going down a storm at Belfast International Airport. Called Ulster Artisans, it’s been open since Saturday 26th September.

The producers involved include Passion Preserved which is a range of chutneys and relishes.

“Customers tell me that they love that I grow a lot of my own produce and we end up chatting about gardening and farming in Northern Ireland” says Claire Kelly from Passion Preserved.

Baked in Belfast also makes marmalades and jams with quirky alcoholic additions. They also sell pottery. Many customers tell Leona Kane from Broighter Gold that they have never tasted rapeseed oil before. Harnett’s Oils are also there with their range of oils and dressings including Rapeseed, Hemp and Raspberry Vinaigrette.

Claire Kelly says that some people are buying from both Harnett’s and Broighter Gold because they love the fact that the two growing regions within Northern Ireland produce such different flavours within the oils.

Also on sale are Eleanor Craig’s Fudge, Neary Nogs Chocolates, who are the first ever bean to bar roasters and chocolate manufacturers in Northern Ireland. Abernethy Butter is selling there as well as City Cheese Alpine style raw milk Gouda and Young Buck which is Northern Ireland’s first raw milk blue cheese.

“The airport has been amazing and has given us such a wonderful welcome from management to all members of staff who love the fact that something local is available in the airport. Loads of staff are talking about starting their Christmas shopping with us!” says Claire Kelly.

“Because so many people have loads of time to kill we have in a way been “entertainment’ as well as they have wanted to chat to us about the food scene in Northern Ireland and what’s going on here with regard to food and restaurants.

“Passengers want the stories behind the product and we have been able to give that to them face to face. So many have mentioned the fact that the products are made by “real” people and that’s what they want to bring home. People have also commented on how nice it is to see small producers’ products available.”

Although they can’t be in the shop because of licensing laws, Ruby Blue Vodka and Liqueurs are for sale in Duty Free next door.

Everything is “flying” off the shelves, so maybe this pop-up will become permanent.

Hearty congratulations to all Northern Ireland Blas na hEireann award winners!

Hearty congratulations to all the Northern Ireland food and drink companies collecting awards in the Blas na hEireann, Irish Food Awards, last weekend. It’s tremendous to see so many companies, both large and small and across most sectors, coming from Dingle with awards which will help them to develop business especially in the Republic of Ireland.

The winners emerged from a record of some 47 local products shortlisted by an eminent panel of judges. What a great year it’s been for our companies in prestigious event like Blas, the UK Great Taste Awards, the Irish Quality Food and Drink Awards, the Food Manufacturing Excellence Awards and the UK Quality Food Awards.

More than 30 products from 22 local companies gained awards at last month’s Irish Quality Food and Drink Awards. Successful companies ranged from larger businesses such as Linden Foods, Dale Farm and Irwin’s Bakery to smaller and artisan enterprises such as Clandeboye Estate Yoghurt, Cavanagh Free Range Eggs, Whites Oats and Niche Drinks. Shortlisted for the highly influential Food Manufacturing Excellence Awards were Moy Park, Hannan Meats, Mash Direct and Willowbrook Foods.

Newcomers like Shortcross Gin and RubyBlue Vodka have also won international recognition for the originality and quality of their products.

People often ask me what the point is in entering the many award competitions in the UK and Ireland. My answer is simple: the awards usually produce contacts with and then contracts from supermarkets, symbol brands, independent retailers and delis in Britain and Ireland.

Top buyers from the leading supermarkets were present when the awards were announced at Blas last Sunday. They had opportunities to talk to the processors and to sample all the food and drink shortlisted by the judges as well as the winners.

Over the years we’ve seen award winners being listed by high-end retailers such as Harrods, Fortnum and Mason, Waitrose, Harvey Nichols, Marks and Spencer, Brown Thomas, Fallon and Byrne and Donnybrook Fair, as well as supermarkets with a longstanding commitment to our products such as Tesco, Sainsbury and Asda. Discounters such as Lidl and Aldi have also been working on new products with many of our companies.

Awards are effectively a badge of excellence that retailers look for when considering new suppliers. We’d hope to see a great many companies bidding for such endorsements especially during the forthcoming Year of Food and Drink in 2016. Northern Ireland will be hosting another visit here by leading judges in the UK Great Taste Awards, the ‘Oscars’ of the food and drink industry.

They will include many of the UK most influential food writers, stylists and chefs, thereby helping to raise the profile of our food and drink in 2016. We’ll hope to see a great many more of our companies bidding for recognition in the Great Taste Awards and the many other quality and innovation focused challenges.

Success in internationally recognised awards also showcase Northern Ireland as a great place to visit to enjoy premium quality food and drink. This profile will help Tourism Northern Ireland and Tourism Ireland as they seek to leverage the profile of our food and drink to attract tourists and other visitors.

Success of recent events!

Among the many tremendous food festivals that I’ve taken food journalists to in recent months is the hugely successful Potato Festival at the Giant’s Causeway, a tremendous event that attracted thousands of visitors to the stunning venue.

The visitors learned about the quality and breadth of local artisan products such as dry cured Kennedy Bacon, as well as large businesses such as Old Bushmills Distillery. It was tremendously encouraging to see the historic distillery supporting the event, now in its third year and set to grow stronger in both the short and long term.

Over 6,500 visitors from all over Northern Ireland and tourists had an opportunity to sample local products and talk directly with the people who produce them here in Northern Ireland. They were also given tips from top chefs from The Causeway Hotel, The Bushmills Inn, Thyme and Co and Harrys Shack on how to create delicious dishes using readily available and premium quality local products.

What events like the Potato Festival provide is a face-to-face engagement between consumers and the producers of local food and to hear how they make it. They gathered around the stalls of Dromore’s Krazibaker to see how he makes traditional Irish griddle breads such as soda bread and potato farls and were fascinated by Will Abernethy of Abernethy Butter churning butter on site.

We’ve also seen this engagement work tremendously well at the Ulster Artisans’ shop at Belfast International Airport. This has enabled travellers to sample local produce and talk directly with the producers. It’s been a tremendous success.

And I commend the airport’s management on what should be tremendously beneficial for the burgeoning artisan sector in particular. I hope that the initiative, the only country market airside at any airport in the world, will be further developed in terms of participating companies and scope provided within the departures zone.

Community food festivals events will be part of a really exciting programme of activities designed to capture the imagination and support of local people during the forthcoming Year of Food and Drink 2016. Local food festivals, therefore, will be a crucially important element in the year ahead. Indeed, 2015 has been a great year for such festivals across Northern Ireland. Consumers are now supporting such events because they appreciate the quality of the food available at these markets.

This is how it should be because we want to engage the entire community in support what will be an immensely important initiative for food producers, including artisan enterprises, and for the farmers who provide the essential and high quality ingredients upon which our most important industry depends.

The boost in sales for local produce which, we all hope, should result from Year of Food and Drink 2016 should contribute significantly to the rural economy and increase awareness of the contribution made by our dedicated farmers.

Year of Food and Drink will provide as springboard to accelerate the growth of the agri-food industry which already contributes around £5 million to the local community. This provides tangible benefits to local communities especially in rural areas.

We’ve now got a distinctive Year of Food and Drink 2016 branding and identity that will feature at these and other food events from the start of next year. We want to see community groups using the logo to brand food and drink events in which they are involved.

Local food festivals will be important in spreading the message about Year of Food and Drink because of the engagement they encourage between smaller businesses and artisans and consumers increasingly seeking products that offer outstanding taste, safety, heritage and provenance.

The existing network of local community festivals will be part of a co-ordinated, comprehensive and exciting programme of activities for what will surely be a tremendously exciting and immensely positive 12-month period for producers including farmers.

So, do get involved and help ensure the success of Year of Food and Drink in 2016 to recognise the importance of our agri food industry the following year and for the longer term
