International Cheese Awards endorse Quality of Fivemiletown

Speciality cheeses from Fivemiletown Creamery in Co Tyrone struck gold at the prestigious Nantwich International Cheese Awards in England.

Fivemiletown, a market leader in handmade cheeses, pipped 600 cheese producers from 24 countries, including France, the home of Brie, to win gold for its Ballyoak Smoked Brie.

Some 3,000 cheeses were displayed to a panel of expert judges by the 600 processors taking part in the event.

Fivemiletown, a dairy co-operative, also gained gold for its Boilie Goat’s Cheese filled with Pest and Black Olive Tapenade and bronze for its Boilie Goat’s Cheese with Garlic Infused Oil.

The Boilie Goat’s Cheese pearl filled with Pest and Black Olive Tapenade is the latest outcome of the company’s investment in innovative products aimed at the ready meals marketplace.

Fivemiletown is working with an internationally regarded chef on the development of highly innovative products in terms of taste, visual appearance and functionality.

Fivemiletown is Northern Ireland’s only speciality cheese producer. It also works closely with food development experts at Loughry College in Cookstown on new products and processes.

The international awards follow the company’s outstanding success, last week, in the Great Taste Awards, which saw the judges awards seven golds to Fivemiletown’s speciality cheeses. The Great Taste Awards are held annually by the influential UK Guild of Fine Foods.

The Nantwich International Cheese Awards is a highlight in the global food calendar.

Mervyn McCaughey, Managing Director of Fivemiletown Creamery, commenting on the Nantwich Awards, said: “Winning two golds and a bronze at Nantwich is a marvellous endorsement of the quality and innovation of all our products and the tremendous commitment of everyone at Fivemiletown, from the farmers who ensure we have the best milk available, to the cheesemakers whoi lovingly make our cheeses by hand, to the marketing team which has helped us grow our international business, and the support staff who enable the business to run smoothly and efficiently. We also appreciate the guidance and support of retailers worldwide.

“The awards will help us as we seek to drive the company to even greater success, both at home and internationally. Today Fivemiletown speciality cheeses are found on shelves throughout Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Great Britain, other parts of Europe, the US and Hong Kong.”
